The Air Charity Network™ (ACN) is a nonprofit, volunteer-driven organization that coordinates free, non-emergency air travel for children and adults with serious medical conditions and other compelling needs. ACN is comprised of network member organizations who cover specific geographic service areas and coordinate volunteer pilot flights throughout the 50 U.S. states, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Passenger qualifications, as well as contact information for the affiliate in your area, are available online or over the phone.

The American Cancer Society (ACS) is a nationwide, community-based voluntary health organization. In addition to providing a wide variety of services and programs for cancer patients, family, friends, and caregivers, the ACS also supports cancer research, advocacy, and education. The Cancer Helpline, available 24 hours/day, connects callers with trained staff that can help answer general questions about cancer, recent diagnoses and treatment. Cancer Information Specialists can also provide information on support services and assist in finding local and national financial assistance programs.

Information is available in both English and Spanish, with select topics available in 11 other languages.

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, some services and programs may have been suspended. For up-to-date information on available services, visit the Support Programs and Services web page or contact the ACS at the phone number above.

The American Childhood Cancer Organization (ACCO) provides information about childhood cancer, treatment protocols, medication, and research to families with children or adolescents with cancer. Through hospital and community-based programs, local affiliates provide direct support to patients and their families. Support resources include face-to-face and online support groups, childhood cancer camps, as well as free publications and kits. Affiliates may also provide emergency financial assistance for rent or mortgage payments, car repairs, transportation, pre-paid gas cards, and groceries. The Cancer Financial Assistance Coalition (CFAC) is a coalition of organizations that help cancer patients manage financial and practical challenges. Patients and health care providers can search the CFAC online database for cancer support organizations by diagnosis, location, and/or type of assistance. While CFAC cannot respond to individual requests for financial assistance, patients may contact member organizations directly for information and assistance.

There are member agencies in nearly every state and in many U.S. territories which offer services based on the needs of the local community. The Corporate Angel Network arranges over 2,500 free flights per year on corporate jets (using the empty seats on corporate aircraft flying on routine business) for all cancer patients, bone marrow donors, and bone marrow recipients who are able to walk up and down the steps to a private plane without assistance and do not require oxygen, IV, or any other form of life support during the flight. Eligibility is not based on financial need, and patients may travel as often as necessary. Transportation is provided only if patients travel to or from a recognized cancer treatment center (American College of Surgeons or National Cancer Institute-designated Cancer Center). To obtain free air transportation, contact the Corporate Angel Network Toll-Free Patient Line or via e-mail to register within 3 weeks of a specific appointment at a recognized cancer treatment center and provide a phone number where you can be reached. Back-up travel arrangements should be made with a travel agency or airline because the Corporate Angel Network cannot guarantee a flight.

Eldercare Locator is a public service of the U.S. Administration on Aging that helps older adults and their families access home and community-based services, including transportation, meals, home care, and caregiver support services. The goal is to provide users with the information and resources they need to help older persons live independently and safely in their homes and communities for as long as possible.

Language interpretation is available for 150 languages. Online chat is also available through their website.

Good Days provides financial support for qualified patients with chronic and life-altering diseases (including some types of cancer), allowing them access to treatment that may otherwise be unaffordable. Programs may include assistance with prescription co-pay and health insurance premiums, diagnostic testing, and treatment-related travel expenses. Assistance programs may change depending on available funding.

Information on current programs, eligibility criteria, and other support resources is available online or by speaking with a Care Navigator. Support in Spanish is available over the phone and via chat.

The Healthcare Hospitality Network, Inc. (HHN) is a nationwide professional association of nearly 200 nonprofit organizations that provide free or significantly reduced cost lodging to patients, families and their loved ones who are receiving medical treatment away from home. Unlike a hotel, hospital hospitality houses provide opportunities for those going through similar stressful situations to come together as a community where they can support one another. Houses have shared kitchens, common living areas and private bedrooms. Joe’s House lists thousands of lodging facilities, including individual homes, hospitality houses, nonprofit housing, apartments, hotels, hostels, and more. To locate lodging, the website allows you to search by state, city, or healthcare facility. Contact information, amenities, rates, reservation methods, and requirements are available for each facility.

Livestrong provides free, confidential, one-on-one support to anyone affected by cancer, including patients, loved ones, friends, health care professionals and caregivers. Through education, referrals, and counseling services, Livestrong helps patients, and their loved ones, manage the physical, emotional, and practical effects of cancer. Support resources provide information on insurance, employment and financial concerns, transportation, emotional support and counseling, treatment concerns and clinical trials, nutrition, specialized services for young adults, and information on fertility and associated financial support programs. Livestrong Cancer Navigators provide over-the-phone assistance in English and Spanish.

The Lymphoma Research Foundation (LRF) is a voluntary health organization devoted to funding lymphoma research and providing patients and health care professionals with information on the disease. LRF’s support programs include the Lymphoma Support Network, a one-to-one peer support program that matches lymphoma patients or caregivers with volunteers who have had similar lymphoma-related experiences. Trained staff members are available to answer questions, offer individual support, and search for clinical trials on the Lymphoma Helpline and Clinical Trials Information Service. LRF’s Patient Aid Grant program provides limited assistance to lymphoma patients currently undergoing treatment for help with medical bills, transportation, temporary lodging, and childcare.

The research goals of LRF are focused on engaging and educating junior researchers and bringing together investigators focusing on specific diseases or other focal points. The Foundation has launched several special research programs, including an initiative to study mantle cell lymphoma, a type of non-Hodgkin lymphoma that is especially challenging to treat. The Foundation advocates on behalf of the lymphoma community to increase federal funding for lymphoma research and education, and to ensure access to high-quality cancer care for every patient.

The Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation (Meso Foundation) is a nonprofit collaboration of patients and families, physicians, advocates, and researchers dedicated to eradicating mesothelioma. The Meso Foundation aims to provide up-to-date information on the disease and its treatment, as well as to connect patients and families with specialists, support resources and community. Mesothelioma experts are available over-the-phone and via email. Patients traveling for an initial consultation and those enrolled in a clinical trial may be eligible for reimbursement of travel-related expenditures.

The Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation (MMRF) provides information for patients with multiple myeloma and other types of plasma cell disorders. In addition to resources specific to the disease, including information on signs and symptoms, initial diagnosis, and treatment options, a variety of publications and educational programs are available for patients and their caregivers. The MMRF also provides information on finding a treatment center, support groups, and financial assistance programs. Nurse Patient Navigators offer information and support over-the-phone, via email and through social media. Select publications are available in Spanish.

The National Children’s Cancer Society (NCCS) provides emotional, financial and educational support to children with cancer, their families and survivors. Types of financial assistance available include emergency assistance for living expenses, travel costs related to cancer treatment, and college scholarships for childhood cancer survivors. NCCS also provides information and support during and after treatment, including information on the late effects of childhood cancer and a list of long-term follow up clinics. Their website provides information on prescription assistance, drug discount coupons, rebates and cards, diagnosis-specific programs, free or low-cost clinics, scholarships, and transportation. The three core programs of Ronald McDonald House Charities® (RMHC) are the Ronald McDonald House, Ronald McDonald Family Room, and Ronald McDonald Care Mobile. Ronald McDonald Houses are places where out-of-town families can stay while their children are being treated for a serious illness. Families with childhood patients either stay at no cost or are asked to make a donation of up to $25 per day, depending on the house. The Ronald McDonald Family Room program provides a room located just steps from neonatal or pediatric intensive care units. Families of critically ill children can use the Ronald McDonald Family Room to rest, take showers, grab a bite to eat, and even do laundry. Through relationships with local health care providers, the Ronald McDonald Care Mobile program brings cost-effective medical, dental, and health education services directly to underserved children in both rural and urban areas around the world. All services are provided in a state-of-the-art vehicle built specifically for delivering pediatric health care services. RMHC also offers scholarships to students in financial need who have demonstrated academic achievement, leadership, and community involvement. Scholarships are for students in the United States living in areas where there are participating local Chapters.

The Alliance offers financial assistance (grant maximum: $500) for expenses related to second opinion consultations. Support is available through their Peer-to-Peer Network which matches individuals affected by sarcoma with members who have had a similar experience. Sisters Network® Inc. (SNI) is a national African American breast cancer survivorship organization that addresses the breast health needs of African American women through its affiliate chapters and partnerships with existing service providers. Sisters Network has a breast cancer assistance program (B-CAP) that provides assistance to women facing financial challenges after diagnosis. The program provides financial assistance for mammograms, copays, office visits, prescriptions, and medical-related lodging and transportation. An application form to apply for assistance may be obtained by calling or sending in a request via e-mail.

The Triple Negative Breast Cancer Foundation (TNBC), in partnership with CancerCare, offers free, professional support services to anyone affected by triple negative breast cancer. Online resources include information on diagnosis, treatment, and survivorship, publications, and a variety of educational and support forums.

The TNBC Helpline, available in English and Spanish, is staffed by experienced oncology social workers with specific knowledge of the disease. Helpline staff can also connect callers with CancerCare services, including: co-pay assistance, transportation and other social services.

The mission of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) is to create strong, sustainable, inclusive communities and quality, affordable homes for all. The primary programs administered by HUD include mortgage and loan insurance, grants to help communities with economic development, job opportunities and housing rehabilitation, and HOME Investment Partnership Act block grants to develop and support affordable housing for low-income residents. Other programs include rental assistance, public or subsidized housing for low-income individuals and families, homeless assistance provided through local communities and faith-based and other nonprofit organizations, and fair housing public education and enforcement. HUD continues to play a major role in providing shelter for America's most vulnerable populations: the working poor, minorities, Native Americans, people with disabilities, people with AIDS, the elderly, and the homeless.
