The 4th Angel Mentoring Program provides free and confidential telephone or e-mail support to cancer patients and their caregivers. Participants are matched with trained mentors, who are cancer survivors themselves or have been a caregiver to a cancer patient. Participants are matched based on similar characteristics including gender, age, cancer diagnosis, and treatment type. Opportunities are also available for cancer survivors and their caregivers to volunteer as mentors.

ABCD provides free, customized breast cancer information and one-to-one emotional support for patients, families and friends. Working as a complement to the medical team, the Mentor Matching Program connects people seeking help with someone who has gone through a similar experience. These highly customized matches pair people with the same diagnosis and treatment plan who also have common interests, personal traits and family dynamics. Additional support is available through its Breast Cancer Support Center. The American Cancer Society (ACS) is a nationwide, community-based voluntary health organization. In addition to providing a wide variety of services and programs for cancer patients, family, friends, and caregivers, the ACS also supports cancer research, advocacy, and education. The Cancer Helpline, available 24 hours/day, connects callers with trained staff that can help answer general questions about cancer, recent diagnoses and treatment. Cancer Information Specialists can also provide information on support services and assist in finding local and national financial assistance programs.

Information is available in both English and Spanish, with select topics available in 11 other languages.

The American Childhood Cancer Organization (ACCO) provides information about childhood cancer, treatment protocols, medication, and research to families with children or adolescents with cancer. Through hospital and community-based programs, local affiliates provide direct support to patients and their families. Support resources include face-to-face and online support groups, childhood cancer camps, as well as free publications and kits. Affiliates may also provide emergency financial assistance for rent or mortgage payments, car repairs, transportation, pre-paid gas cards, and groceries. The American Institute for Cancer Research (AICR) funds research on the relationship of nutrition, physical activity, and weight management to cancer risk. Online resources provide information on nutrition and exercise for cancer patients, scientific literature on cancer prevention and reducing cancer risk, healthy lifestyles, recipes, a video resource library, and publications. The Nutrition Hotline, available through the number listed above, provides information for individuals with specific questions regarding diet and nutrition. Questions are forwarded to a nutritionist and generally answered within 72 hours.

The registry includes more than 22 million volunteers willing to donate bone marrow and 300,000 units of umbilical cord blood. Be The Match® supports patients, caregivers and families before, during and after a transplant through one-on-one support, referrals and free educational resources. The Patient Assistance Grant Program helps eligible patients, and their caregivers, access financial support for costs associated with a donor search, travel, housing, and prescription co-pays. The Cancer Hope Network is a nonprofit organization that provides free and confidential one-on-one support to cancer patients and their families in the U.S. and Canada. Matches are based on diagnosis, treatment, side effects, and overall demographics (age, gender, etc.). Talking About Clinical Trials (TACT) offers clients an opportunity to connect with volunteers that have been through a clinical trial. The Cancer Legal Resource Center (CLRC), a program of the Disability Rights Legal Center, provides information to help educate and support patients, their families, healthcare professionals, and advocates on a variety of cancer-related legal issues, including: maintaining employment through treatment, accessing healthcare and government benefits, taking medical leave, and estate planning. Legal information and resources, including a Patient Legal Handbook, are available over-the-phone and online. The CLRC also maintains a panel of qualified attorneys who can be matched, upon request, with callers needing legal counsel.

Those who wish to contact the CLRC national telephone assistance line will be asked to leave a voicemail message. Depending on call volume, it may take several days to receive a return call. CLRC encourages those interested in their services to contact them via email. Many online resources are available in Spanish.

The Cancer Support Community (CSC) is dedicated to providing emotional support for individuals affected by cancer, including their families and friends. With its online community and global network of 175 locations, the CSC offers a variety of free services, including: support groups, counseling, cancer education, navigating costs, publications, webinars, personal patient websites (MyLifeLine), and healthy lifestyle programs. The CSC also conducts research and advocates for those whose lives have been disrupted by cancer. Select online resources are available in Spanish, Chinese, and other languages.

The Cancer Support Helpline’s licensed counselors provide guidance, resources and support to cancer patients or their loved ones. Counseling is available in over 200 languages. For longer-term support, referrals to local mental health professionals are available.

CancerCare provides free, professional support services and information to help anyone affected by cancer. Services include individual and group counseling, support groups, educational workshops, publications, practical help and referrals. The CancerCare Co-Payment Assistance Foundation (CCAF) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping qualified patients afford co-payments, coinsurance and deductibles for prescribed cancer treatments. Patients must be in active treatment or have a treatment plan in place prior to applying. Assistance programs may change depending on available funding.

The Children's Brain Tumor Foundation (CBTF) is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to improve the treatment, quality of life, and long term outlook for children with brain and spinal cord tumors through research, support, education, and advocacy for families and survivors.

CBTF has a free publication, A Resource Guide for Parents of Children with Brain and Spinal Cord Tumors, and also co-sponsors conferences, teleconferences, and webinars for families, survivors, and health care professionals. CBTF offers a toll-free support line where you may speak with pediatric neuro-oncology social workers. CBTF's Family 2 Family Network allows families to share their experiences with those having similar concerns. CBTF also hosts and sponsors events, such as the Kids Cruise or Brain Tumor Week at Camp Sunshine, which offer families fun while building relationships within the community. The Children's Brain Tumor Foundation funds research to identify the causes of childhood brain tumors to find effective treatments.

The Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP) is a state and federal partnership that provides free or low-cost health coverage for children age 18 and younger childhood whose families earn too much income to qualify for Medicaid but cannot afford to purchase private health insurance coverage. States have considerable flexibility to establish income eligibility rules for CHIP, but children enrolling in the program must be otherwise uninsured. Callers will be referred to the CHIP program in their state for further information about what the program covers, who is eligible, and the minimum qualifications.

Cleaning for a Reason offers free professional housecleaning for cancer patients recovering from surgery, in cancer treatment, or in hospice care. Partnering with qualified, local residential cleaning services throughout the U.S. and Canada, eligible patients are matched with cleaning companies and can receive up to two free house cleanings. Please note that service is dependent on the availability and capacity of a cleaning company in the patient’s area. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) Colorectal Cancer Control Program (CRCCP) helps states and tribes across the U.S. increase colorectal cancer screening rates among men and women aged 50 years and older. Funds awarded by the CRCCP are used by states to promote colorectal cancer screening. Through this program, six states also provide direct colorectal cancer screening and follow-up services to people who meet specific criteria. Those states are: Delaware, Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, New York, and Washington. Other programs that do not offer screening services may refer to local resources for those seeking screening. The Corporate Angel Network arranges over 2,500 free flights per year on corporate jets (using the empty seats on corporate aircraft flying on routine business) for all cancer patients, bone marrow donors, and bone marrow recipients who are able to walk up and down the steps to a private plane without assistance and do not require oxygen, IV, or any other form of life support during the flight. Eligibility is not based on financial need, and patients may travel as often as necessary. Transportation is provided only if patients travel to or from a recognized cancer treatment center (American College of Surgeons or National Cancer Institute-designated Cancer Center). To obtain free air transportation, contact the Corporate Angel Network Toll-Free Patient Line or via e-mail to register within 3 weeks of a specific appointment at a recognized cancer treatment center and provide a phone number where you can be reached. Back-up travel arrangements should be made with a travel agency or airline because the Corporate Angel Network cannot guarantee a flight.

Fertility Within Reach (FWR) is a national, non-profit organization which aims to increase access to assisted reproductive treatment for those who need it. They provide education and resources to help people access infertility health benefits. FWR’s Banking on the Future program awards financial grants to cover the cost of storing reproductive cells of adolescent and young adult cancer patients (post puberty up to the age of 21) prior to treatment. Fight Colorectal Cancer (Fight CRC) is the leading patient-empowerment and advocacy organization in the United States, providing balanced and objective information on colon and rectal cancer research, treatment, and policy. Educational resources provide information on colorectal cancer prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and survivorship. The Fight CRC Patient Resource Line, in partnership with the Cancer Support Community, connects callers to a variety of local and/or national resources, as well as provides short-term counseling, treatment decision planning, and financial counseling related to the costs of cancer and its treatments. First Descents offers young adults with cancer (ages 18 to 39) a free weeklong outdoor adventure experience where they will learn to surf, kayak and climb. Each session is limited to 15 participants and ensures individualized care, medical attention and an intimate experience with fellow survivors. These programs are available to young adults with cancer regardless of financial means. All program costs (food, lodging and activities) are provided free of charge. Travel scholarships are available and are awarded based on need. The programs are offered from April through October and take place across the U.S. and internationally.

Friend for Life is a network of cancer survivors and caregivers trained to provide free one-on-one emotional and psychosocial support to persons recently diagnosed with cancer, and their loved ones. A wide array of criteria may be considered in matching clients and volunteers, such as type of cancer, treatment, age, and gender. One-on-one support is mainly offered via telephone, though other points-of-contact may be arranged. Volunteer support is available in several languages, including Spanish, French, and German.

The Healthcare Hospitality Network, Inc. (HHN) is a nationwide professional association of nearly 200 nonprofit organizations that provide free or significantly reduced cost lodging to patients, families and their loved ones who are receiving medical treatment away from home. Unlike a hotel, hospital hospitality houses provide opportunities for those going through similar stressful situations to come together as a community where they can support one another. The International Association of Laryngectomees (IAL) is a nonprofit, voluntary organization composed of member clubs and recognized regional organizations. These clubs are generally known as Lost Chord or New Voice clubs. Club membership ranges from 10 to more than 300 laryngectomees. The purpose of the IAL is to assist these local clubs in their efforts toward the total rehabilitation of the laryngectomee. The IAL exchanges ideas and disseminates information to member clubs and to the public, facilitates the formation of new clubs, fosters improvement in laryngectomee programs, and improves the minimum standards for teachers of post-laryngectomy speech. The IAL Voice Institute trains laryngectomees and prospective instructors of speech in an intensive 5-day course that emphasizes speech restoration as the central component to multidisciplinary total rehabilitation. The International Cancer Information Service Group (ICISG) is an independent organization composed of more than 70 cancer information services worldwide. The ICISG strives to provide high quality information services and resources on all aspects of cancer to those affected by or concerned about cancer. Services and resources vary, but may include telephone and email help lines, websites and social media, in-person assistance, publications, media, outreach and education programs, and communications research.

Members share information and expertise and assist groups interested in starting a Cancer Information Service (CIS) program. A CIS Tool Box has been developed based on the worldwide experiences of people who are managing quality cancer information services. This resource may be used as a planning guide for new CIS offices and offers ideas for improving and expanding current services.

The ICISG provides a list of cancer organizations that provide cancer information in various languages including Chinese, Korean, Spanish and many other languages.

The International Waldenstrom's Macroglobulinemia Foundation (IWMF) provides encouragement and support to people with Waldenstrom macroglobulinemia (WM) and offers information and education programs that address patient's concerns, and promotes and supports research leading to a cure. Kesem is a national nonprofit supporting children facing a parent's cancer. The Lymphoma Research Foundation (LRF) is a voluntary health organization devoted to funding lymphoma research and providing patients and health care professionals with information on the disease. LRF’s support programs include the Lymphoma Support Network, a one-to-one peer support program that matches lymphoma patients or caregivers with volunteers who have had similar lymphoma-related experiences. Trained staff members are available to answer questions, offer individual support, and search for clinical trials on the Lymphoma Helpline and Clinical Trials Information Service. LRF’s Patient Aid Grant program provides limited assistance to lymphoma patients currently undergoing treatment for help with medical bills, transportation, temporary lodging, and childcare.

The research goals of LRF are focused on engaging and educating junior researchers and bringing together investigators focusing on specific diseases or other focal points. The Foundation has launched several special research programs, including an initiative to study mantle cell lymphoma, a type of non-Hodgkin lymphoma that is especially challenging to treat. The Foundation advocates on behalf of the lymphoma community to increase federal funding for lymphoma research and education, and to ensure access to high-quality cancer care for every patient.

Lynch Syndrome International (LSI) provides support for individuals afflicted with Lynch syndrome (a hereditary disorder that places a person at higher risk of developing colorectal cancer, endometrial cancer, and various other types of aggressive cancers), increases public awareness of the syndrome, educates members of the general public and health care professionals, and provides support for Lynch syndrome research endeavors.

Medicaid (Medical Assistance) is a jointly funded, Federal-State health insurance program for low-income individuals and families who fit into an eligibility group that is recognized by federal and state law. Although the Federal Government establishes general guidelines for the program, Medicaid is a state-administered program, and each state sets its own guidelines regarding eligibility and services. Information about coverage is available from local state welfare offices, state health departments, state social service agencies, or the state Medicaid office. The Vaccines for Children Program (VCP) provides immunization services for children 18 and under who are Medicaid eligible, uninsured, underinsured, and receiving childhood immunizations through a Federally Qualified Health Center or Rural Health Clinic, or are Native American or Alaska Native. Medicare is a Federal Government health insurance program that is administered by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). Medicare is health insurance for people age 65 or older, under age 65 with certain disabilities, and people of any age with End-Stage Renal Disease. Medicare is divided into four parts - Parts A, B, C, and D. Part A is Hospital Insurance and helps pay for inpatient hospital care and care at nursing facilities, hospice, and home health care services. Part B is Medical Insurance and covers doctor services, outpatient care, and some preventive services. Part C is the Medicare Advantage Plans, which allow you to get Medicare benefits through private companies approved by and under contract with Medicare (includes Part A, Part B, and usually other benefits Medicare doesn't cover). Most plans also provide prescription drug coverage. Part D is Prescription Drug Coverage and is run by private companies approved by Medicare. Medicare reimburses patient care costs for its beneficiaries who participate in clinical trials designed to diagnose or treat cancer. Mercy Medical Angels provides free transportation to medical care. This includes tickets for commercial air travel or flights on private aircraft flown by volunteer pilots for patients and one medically necessary escort. They also provide assistance with ground transportation for patients who need to travel more than 50 miles for medical treatment. The Web site features printable documents on topics such as female and male fertility options, and questions to ask your doctor prior to starting treatment. Many survivor videos are available for viewing on the site. Survivors share their experiences, decision making, and advice. Expert videos provide information on basic fertility information, common questions, and information on female, male, and childhood fertility procedures and treatment. The Web site has a physician finder resource to search for a physician who can assist with fertility preservation options. Patients can also call the toll-free FERTLine to talk to a Registered Nurse Patient Navigator who can help patients wade through the difficult decision process of fertility preservation. This Patient Navigator can also help make referrals to outside centers. The Web site is also available in Spanish.

The National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) is the organization of insurance regulators from the 50 states, the District of Columbia, and the 5 U.S. territories. A state insurance regulator's primary responsibilities are to educate the public about insurance and protect the interests of insurance consumers, and the NAIC helps regulators fulfill that obligation. NAIC assists people who do not have insurance and also fields insurance complaints. NAIC has a Consumer Information Source (CIS) tool on its Web site that provides information on insurance companies that you can review before purchasing insurance. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program (NBCCEDP) provides low-income, uninsured, and underserved women access to breast and cervical cancer screening and diagnostic services. Screening support is provided in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, 5 U.S. territories, and 11 American Indian/Alaska Native tribes or tribal organizations. Services include clinical breast exams, mammograms, Pap tests, HPV tests, pelvic exams, diagnostic testing if results are abnormal, and referrals to treatment. In 2000, Congress passed the Breast and Cervical Cancer Prevention and Treatment Act, which enables women in the NBCCEDP program to access treatment through Medicaid.

The three core programs of Ronald McDonald House Charities® (RMHC) are the Ronald McDonald House, Ronald McDonald Family Room, and Ronald McDonald Care Mobile. Ronald McDonald Houses are places where out-of-town families can stay while their children are being treated for a serious illness. Families with childhood patients either stay at no cost or are asked to make a donation of up to $25 per day, depending on the house. Families of critically ill children can use the Ronald McDonald Family Room to rest, take showers, grab a bite to eat, and even do laundry. Through relationships with local health care providers, the Ronald McDonald Care Mobile program brings cost-effective medical, dental, and health education services directly to underserved children in both rural and urban areas around the world. All services are provided in a state-of-the-art vehicle built specifically for delivering pediatric health care services. RMHC also offers scholarships to students in financial need who have demonstrated academic achievement, leadership, and community involvement. Social Security provides a monthly income for eligible retired persons, surviving spouses and family members, and the disabled. SSI supplements Social Security payments for aged, blind, and disabled people with little or no income. It provides cash to meet basic needs for food, clothing, and shelter. The SSA has a new Compassionate Allowances initiative that allows Social Security to target the most obviously disabled individuals for allowances based on objective medical information that can be obtained quickly. The State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) is a state program funded by the Federal government to provide information, referrals, and counseling to Medicare recipients and their families/caregivers. Specifically, SHIP counselors provide information on Medigap policies, long-term care insurance, Medicare health plan choices, Medicare rights and protections, and assistance with filing an appeal. The programs in each state often have different names but they all have the same purpose. Services may be received on the telephone or in face-to-face counseling sessions. (ThyCa) is a national nonprofit organization of thyroid cancer survivors, families, and health care professionals dedicated to educate, communicate, and support early detection for thyroid cancer. ThyCa offers a toll-free survivors’ line, publications, e-mail support groups, local support groups, a person-to-person network, newsletters, and conferences. ThyCa also offers a free packet of educational materials for newly diagnosed patients. In addition, ThyCa is active in raising funds and providing grants for thyroid cancer research. The organization has volunteers who are fluent in Spanish, and sections of the Web site are available in Spanish.

The Triple Negative Breast Cancer Foundation (TNBC), in partnership with CancerCare, offers free, professional support services to anyone affected by triple negative breast cancer. Online resources include information on diagnosis, treatment, and survivorship, publications, and a variety of educational and support forums.

The TNBC Helpline, available in English and Spanish, is staffed by experienced oncology social workers with specific knowledge of the disease. Helpline staff can also connect callers with CancerCare services, including: co-pay assistance, transportation and other social services.

The mission of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) is to create strong, sustainable, inclusive communities and quality, affordable homes for all. The primary programs administered by HUD include mortgage and loan insurance, grants to help communities with economic development, job opportunities and housing rehabilitation, and HOME Investment Partnership Act block grants to develop and support affordable housing for low-income residents. Other programs include rental assistance, public or subsidized housing for low-income individuals and families, homeless assistance provided through local communities and faith-based and other nonprofit organizations, and fair housing public education and enforcement. Ulman Foundation creates a community of support for young adults, and their loved ones, impacted by cancer. Ulman Navigators (available by phone & email, or onsite in Maryland & D.C.) provide a person-centered approach to patient care. They help to facilitate communication, fertility preservation, emotional and practical support. Ulman sponsors meet-ups and support groups in the Maryland/DC area, offers a national scholarship program for survivors and loved ones between the ages of 15 - 39, and a free run/walk exercise program for cancer survivors.

The Young Survival Coalition (YSC) focuses on issues unique to young women who are diagnosed with breast cancer. YSC works with survivors, caregivers, and the medical, research, advocacy, and legislative communities to improve the quality of life for breast cancer patients age 40 and younger. YSC can help young survivors find a support group, or match survivors with volunteers who’ve had a similar experience. YSC offers online resources including educational and support materials, discussion boards, and information about conferences and symposia.

Some publications are available in Spanish, and Spanish-speaking volunteers are available to serve as survivor matches in its peer-support program.
